Many water purification methods require pretreatment, such as coagulation and flocculation.
In traditional coagulation-flocculation sedimentation, coagulants (such as polydimethyldiallylammonium chloride, cationic coagulants) are added to the source water to generate attraction between suspended particles. Slow stirring of the fluid will cause the particles to aggregate together, forming "flocs".
Then the water pump is pumped into the sedimentation tank, where the solid settles.
Suspended particles can also coagulate and flocculate in the dissolved air flotation system, but not precipitate. Instead, pressure bubbles drive them to the water surface, where they can be skimmed off.
For more relevant information, please refer to: Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) for industrial wastewater treatment
The point flocculation chlorination system is mainly aimed at less developed countries.
To purify water, it uses small packages of chemicals and inexpensive equipment such as buckets and cloth filters.
Lime softening is a technique for "softening" water, or removing calcium and magnesium mineral ions from water. In this case, the substances that precipitate are dissolved salts rather than suspended silt.
